Practical
freight guide

The Netherlands is both a destination and a European logistics gateway. Cargo arriving through Amsterdam or Rotterdam may be intended for a Dutch receiver, a bonded facility or onward distribution elsewhere in the EU. The customs role and final delivery point should be defined before a service is selected.

Clever Couriers compares eligible courier and air-freight options for Australian cartons, samples, equipment and commercial stock. We quote the actual shipment rather than assuming every Netherlands movement ends at the first airport or port scan.

Confirm where the goods enter and where they finish

A delivery to an Amsterdam office, Rotterdam warehouse or Eindhoven technology business is a Dutch import unless another valid customs arrangement applies. Goods merely entering a Dutch gateway for onward transport may use transit, bonded storage or import clearance in the Netherlands.

Ask the receiver or broker to specify the intended procedure. Do not describe an onward European delivery as Netherlands freight simply because the international carrier routes through Amsterdam.

Identify the importer and fiscal arrangement

The importer should be an eligible EU economic operator with the necessary EORI and customs representation. Dutch logistics providers can offer different services, but warehousing or delivery alone does not automatically make them importer of record.

Confirm the legal entity, broker, VAT position and party responsible for duty and clearance. If fiscal representation or postponed import VAT is proposed, the importer must establish that arrangement with qualified advisers; it is not created by the freight booking.

Supply security-quality product data

EU pre-arrival systems depend on detailed shipment data. State the actual product, material, function, quantity, value, origin and HS code where known. “Ecommerce goods” or “samples” does not identify the commodity.

Keep invoice, packing list and carrier data aligned. If multiple SKUs share one carton, list them clearly rather than using the highest-value item as a catch-all description.

VAT and IOSS for Dutch-bound consumer orders

Import VAT generally applies when goods enter the EU. IOSS can be used for qualifying distance sales of non-excisable goods to consumers in consignments not exceeding €150, provided the seller or marketplace has implemented the scheme and supplies the identifier correctly.

IOSS does not cover ordinary business imports or remove product restrictions. Establish whether VAT was collected at sale and whether the goods are genuinely being imported in the Netherlands or placed under another customs procedure.

Prepare the Dutch delivery address

Dutch addresses normally need recipient or company, street and building number, optional addition, four-digit postcode plus two letters, and locality. Keep the spacing and letter suffix accurate because postcode and house number together can identify the delivery point precisely.

For warehouses, include dock, gate, appointment reference and opening hours. City-centre locations can restrict vehicle access, while greenhouse, farm and industrial areas may need more explicit directions.

Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven require different thinking

Amsterdam is a major air gateway and dense urban destination. Rotterdam is a port and distribution centre with many customs and warehousing options. Eindhoven and other inland technology clusters can receive high-value components but still rely on road linehaul from a gateway.

The carrier route should not be confused with the customer’s delivery promise. Customs release and domestic transfer occur after the international flight reaches Europe.

Temporary goods, repairs and returns

Trade-show equipment, professional tools and items sent for repair may qualify for a temporary or special customs procedure. State the purpose before export and ask the broker what records, security or re-export conditions apply.

Do not describe a normal sale as temporary to delay tax. Serial numbers, ownership evidence and return plans can be essential when goods are genuinely expected to leave the EU again.

Controlled and dangerous products

Food, plants, flowers, animal products, medicines, chemicals and radio equipment may require specialist EU or Dutch controls. Rotterdam and Amsterdam handle many regulated commodities, but infrastructure does not equal automatic permission.

Lithium batteries, aerosols, perfumes and chemicals must be declared for air transport. Obtain battery tests, safety data and dangerous-goods approval where required before expecting a rate to become a booking.

Netherlands quote checklist

  • Australian origin and final Dutch street address;
  • postcode in four-digit/two-letter format and locality;
  • consignee, importer, EORI, broker and VAT responsibility;
  • final destination or onward-EU distribution plan;
  • pieces, packaging, measurements, weight and stackability;
  • specific goods, materials, use, quantity, value and origin;
  • HS code, IOSS or special customs procedure where applicable;
  • controlled-product and dangerous-goods documents; and
  • dock appointment, receiving hours and required date.

Compare the complete door or cargo movement

Clever Couriers can review eligible services and support booking and tracking. Dutch Customs and other authorities determine the entry procedure, assessment and release. Where freight continues beyond the Netherlands, the onward movement must be separately defined.

FreightSafe is limited protection only, subject to exclusions, packaging conditions and claim limits. It is not comprehensive transit insurance.
