A freight depot is an operating facility where consignments can be processed, transferred or held within a carrier network. It is not automatically a public counter, storage unit or unrestricted collection address. Clever Couriers helps confirm eligible depot arrangements for a specific booked shipment.
Never send freight to a depot found in an old directory or online map without a valid booking and instructions. Facilities, opening hours, public access and accepted freight can change.
What a depot does
Depots can consolidate local collections, sort freight, connect road linehaul and organise final delivery. A consignment may pass through an origin and destination depot without the sender or receiver visiting either one.
Tracking can therefore show a facility scan as part of ordinary progress. That scan does not necessarily mean the freight is available for public collection.
Depot-to-depot freight
Where an eligible depot-to-depot service is confirmed, the sender delivers freight to the nominated origin facility and the receiver collects from the nominated destination facility. This can remove local pickup or final-delivery legs, but it transfers practical responsibility to both parties.
Compare opening hours, travel distance, vehicle access and loading equipment before choosing this method. A lower transport price can be outweighed by business time or unsuitable collection arrangements.
Depot drop-off is not assumed
Some carrier facilities do not accept public freight, casual counter transactions, dangerous goods, cash payment or unannounced deliveries. Others may accept only particular service types or booked consignments.
Obtain the exact depot name, address, reference, label and drop-off process from Clever Couriers or the confirmed service instructions. Do not substitute a nearby facility belonging to the same carrier.
Before delivering freight to a depot
Have the goods fully packed, labelled and documented. Confirm the number of pieces, final dimensions, gross weights and commodity. Ask whether a booking number or manifest must accompany the load.
Check vehicle access, dock or forklift arrangements and site safety rules. The depot may not unload an unsuitable vehicle or accept loose, unsafe or incorrectly declared freight.
Collecting freight from a depot
Wait for confirmation that the consignment is available and that depot collection has been authorised. An arrival scan can precede unloading, processing or release. Travelling before release is confirmed may result in a wasted trip.
Bring the required reference and identification. If another person or carrier will collect, arrange authority in advance and confirm what documents they need.
Use a suitable collection vehicle
Know the piece count, dimensions and weight before arrival. A passenger vehicle cannot safely collect every carton, pallet or long item. Palletised freight usually requires compatible vehicle capacity and a lawful restraint method.
Ask how the freight will be loaded. A forklift loading the vehicle at the depot does not remove the collector’s responsibility to secure the load and unload it safely at the destination.
Cut-offs, holding and storage
Depot operating hours are not the same as linehaul cut-offs or public collection windows. Dropping freight late in the day may mean it is processed on the next operating day. Weekend and public-holiday access varies.
Depots are not indefinite storage facilities. Holding time, storage charges or return processes may apply if freight is not collected. Confirm the available period rather than assuming the goods can remain until convenient.
Dangerous, restricted and unusual freight
Dangerous goods need correct classification, documents and prior approval. A depot address is not permission to lodge them. Long, heavy, oversized, fragile or temperature-sensitive freight can also have facility-specific rules.
Provide photographs and handling information for unusual items. The origin facility must be able to receive the handling unit, and the destination facility must be able to release it safely.
Depot arrangement checklist
- confirmed carrier, facility and full address;
- valid booking and consignment reference;
- accepted drop-off or collection date and window;
- piece count, measurements, weight and packaging;
- commodity and dangerous-goods approval status;
- labels, manifest, identification and release authority;
- vehicle, forklift and load-restraint requirements; and
- contact process for delays or changed plans.
Changing door delivery to depot collection
Do not simply travel to the facility when a door delivery is delayed. A redirection or hold-for-collection request may need carrier approval, receiver authority, time to process and an additional charge.
Keep the original delivery instruction in place until the change is confirmed. Competing instructions can delay release or final delivery.
Tracking and proof after depot collection
The available tracking record may show collection from the depot rather than delivery to a street address. Confirm what identification, signature or release event will close the consignment. Proof detail varies by service.

Get current instructions for the booked freight
