freight guide

A carton can reach a Chinese gateway quickly and still remain uncleared if the consignee, commodity or value is incomplete. Shipping from Australia to mainland China works best when the receiver understands their role before uplift and every product is described in terms customs can classify.

Clever Couriers compares eligible international courier and air-freight options for Australian businesses sending cartons, samples, parts and palletised commercial goods to China. This page concerns mainland China. Shipments to Hong Kong should be quoted under the separate Hong Kong destination because its customs and delivery framework is different.

Confirm who can import the goods

For a commercial shipment, identify the Chinese business that will act as consignee and importer and confirm it can import the product concerned. The receiver or its broker may need to provide registration, licence, tax or customs information. For a personal courier shipment, identity and personal-use evidence may be requested by the carrier or customs process.

Do not send first and ask the receiver to solve clearance later. Obtain the legal entity name, contact person, telephone number and email, and confirm who is authorised to answer customs questions and pay assessments.

Use a precise Chinese delivery address

Provide province, city, district, street, building and room or unit information, plus the postcode where used. A Chinese-character address supplied by the receiver can help local delivery; retain an English or Romanised version for the export booking. Include a mainland mobile number that will be answered.

Be clear whether delivery is to a factory, bonded zone, office tower, residence or fulfilment warehouse. Industrial estates can have several gates or facilities sharing a broad address, while controlled premises may require appointments or vehicle instructions.

Describe every product beyond “Australian goods”

The commercial invoice should state what the goods are, their material or composition, function, brand and model where relevant, quantity, unit and total value, currency and country of origin. “Machine parts” should become a component-level description such as aluminium drive housings for food-packaging machinery.

Use a reasonable customs value even for free samples, replacements or intercompany transfers. Explain the reason for export and whether the goods are being sold, tested, repaired or returned. The invoice, airway bill and packing list should agree.

Classification and Australian origin

Correct tariff classification affects duty, tax, permits and reporting. If the HS code is uncertain, the Chinese importer or customs adviser should confirm it before dispatch. The presence of an Australia–China trade agreement does not make every Australian shipment duty-free.

Preferential treatment may depend on whether the goods satisfy origin rules and whether valid origin evidence is provided. “Shipped from Australia” is not the same as “Australian origin”; imported goods merely resold or repacked in Australia may not qualify.

Products needing early checks

Food, supplements, cosmetics, therapeutic goods, seeds, timber, animal products, radio equipment, used machinery and branded consumer products can attract additional controls. Ingredients, labelling, registration, inspection or importer licences may be relevant. Ask the consignee to verify the exact product and intended quantity.

Batteries, aerosols, liquids and chemicals also face air-transport acceptance requirements. Supply battery specifications or a safety data sheet when applicable. Customs permission and carrier dangerous-goods approval are separate decisions.

Choose express courier or air freight

Courier can be practical for compatible cartons and urgent samples where the consignee can complete courier clearance. Larger or heavier commercial loads may suit an air-freight movement with a nominated broker or cargo terminal arrangement. The choice depends on chargeable weight, dimensions, value, urgency and entry type.

Measure every finished carton or pallet and include the skid, wrap and projections. Oversized or non-stackable pieces can change both price and acceptance. Confirm whether the Chinese receiver can unload a pallet or whether the delivery scope ends at a cargo facility.

Major-city and regional delivery

Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other major commercial centres may have broad courier and air-cargo access, but the precise district still matters. Inland provinces, county-level cities and remote industrial projects can add domestic transfers, different operating days or a depot handover.

Quote the final postcode and locality rather than the nearest international airport. Customs clearance at a gateway does not complete the final-mile movement.

China quote checklist

  • full Australian pickup and mainland Chinese delivery addresses;
  • Chinese consignee and intended importer details;
  • Chinese-character address and active mainland telephone number;
  • piece count, packaging, dimensions and gross weight;
  • specific product descriptions, materials, brands and models;
  • quantities, values, currency, origin and intended use;
  • HS codes and origin documents where applicable;
  • permits, registrations or dangerous-goods documents; and
  • required arrival date and who will handle clearance charges.

Allow time for customs questions

International transit estimates do not guarantee a customs release date. Inconsistent values, vague descriptions, missing importer information or regulated products can create enquiries. The receiver should monitor messages and respond with supporting documents promptly.

Clever Couriers can compare currently eligible services and help coordinate booking and tracking. China Customs and the nominated importer remain responsible for entry decisions and declarations. FreightSafe is limited protection only, not comprehensive transit insurance.
