Practical
freight guide

Interstate courier work ranges from one labelled carton to several forklifted pallets. Calling every movement a parcel hides the details that determine its route: size, weight, handling method, depot compatibility and access at each end.

Clever Couriers helps businesses compare eligible interstate services for cartons, pallets, crates, long freight and commercial equipment. The account keeps booking and tracking administration together while each shipment is assessed on its own lane and profile.

How road freight crosses state lines

Shared interstate freight is usually collected by a local vehicle, processed through an origin facility and loaded onto scheduled linehaul. At the destination state it may pass through another depot before local delivery.

This network makes consolidated transport efficient, but it also means the freight must tolerate transfers, normal vibration and contact with other consignments. Packaging should be designed for the complete journey.

Cartons in an interstate network

Use sound corrugated cartons with protected contents and strong closures. Label every carton and declare every piece. Heavy cartons need construction and internal blocking appropriate to their weight; a larger box with excess empty space can collapse even when light.

Long cartons and tubes can exceed ordinary parcel limits. Enter their maximum length rather than forcing them into a standard-carton category.

Pallets, crates and machinery

Palletise goods that need mechanical handling or benefit from consolidation. Use an intact rated base, keep the freight within its footprint and restrain it against sliding, tipping and vibration. State whether another load can safely be placed above it.

Machinery may need a skid or crate, verified lifting points and confirmation of fluids, batteries or other regulated components. Photographs help assess irregular loads before collection.

Major corridors and regional extensions

Frequent capital-city corridors can have different schedules from regional or remote routes. A shipment to a regional receiver may travel interstate first and then wait for a connecting local run. The reverse can apply at collection.

Always enter the complete suburb and postcode. “Brisbane to Melbourne” is not enough when one endpoint is actually outside the metro network.

Estimate transit from the collection event

A transit estimate usually assumes collection occurs before the relevant cut-off and the freight is accepted as booked. Missing the pickup window can also mean missing the planned linehaul departure.

Weekends, public holidays, weather, road closures, capacity and receiver availability can change actual timing. Build contingency around installations, events and production commitments.

Access at origin

Have the goods ready at the declared pickup point. Confirm site hours, contact details and loading equipment. A forklift must have sufficient capacity and compatible tine access; a tailgate requires a stable movable base and safe ground.

If the freight is inside a building or behind restricted gates, describe how the driver will reach it. Standard collection does not include dismantling or extensive manual removal.

Access at destination

Distribution centres and major retailers can require purchase-order references, dock appointments and delivery windows. Construction sites may require induction or vehicle controls. Residential sites can have narrow streets, slopes and no unloading equipment.

Ground-level delivery is not the same as internal placement. Stairs, assembly, unpacking and installation need separate arrangements.

What changes interstate pricing?

  • the complete origin and destination postcodes;
  • each handling unit’s dimensions and weight;
  • actual, cubic or occupied-space rating;
  • length, non-stackability and manual handling;
  • service urgency and lane frequency;
  • regional or remote connecting runs;
  • tailgate, forklift and appointment needs; and
  • waiting, redelivery or address corrections.

Tracking an interstate consignment

Tracking may show collection, depot receipt, linehaul departure, destination processing, onboard for delivery and proof of delivery. A long gap between depot scans can be normal while the vehicle travels between states.

If the status passes the expected stage without explanation, contact Clever Couriers with both the booking and carrier references, the last event and the receiver’s current availability.

Regular interstate freight

Businesses with repeat lanes can record standard package profiles, pickup routines and receiver rules. Review the first movements and update the profile whenever packaging, quantity or access changes.

FreightSafe provides limited protection and is not comprehensive transit insurance. Packaging obligations, exclusions and claim limits apply to eligible shipments.

Plan the destination connection

Capital-to-capital linehaul is only the middle of many interstate jobs. A regional receiver may be served after transfer to a local depot or agent, and that connection can run on selected days. Ask for an estimate using the final delivery postcode rather than the nearest capital.

Make sure the destination contact understands the expected handling unit and has the declared unloading equipment. A pallet arriving after a long interstate journey still cannot be delivered safely to a site without the required access.

Allow for state-based operating days

Public holidays, local shutdowns and receiver trading calendars may differ at origin and destination. Count estimated transit in the terms of the selected service and keep contingency around end-of-month, holiday and project deadlines.
