“Shipping boxes” can mean one 8 kg product carton, twelve cartons going to the same store, or a mixed stack that should have been built onto a pallet. Those jobs use different depot space, labels and handling methods. The first step is not choosing a carrier; it is defining every handling unit exactly as the driver will collect it.

Single-carton shipping
A single carton is simplest when it is fully enclosed, strong enough for its packed weight and within the selected service’s dimensions. Use a rigid corrugated box with intact corners and flaps. Retail display packaging, open trays, moving boxes with hand holes and cartons weakened by moisture are not designed to travel unprotected through a general courier network.
Measure the sealed carton at its widest points and weigh it after all cushioning and paperwork have been added. Couriers can compare the actual weight with a volumetric calculation, so an oversized light box may be charged at a higher weight than the scale shows.
Sending several boxes to one receiver
Count every carton as a separate handling piece unless the full load is secured as one palletised unit. Each loose carton needs its own label and must be strong enough to travel independently. Do not tape several finished cartons together: improvised bundles can separate, hide labels and create weak lifting points.
For repeat products, record the size and weight of each carton type rather than multiplying an average. If one carton is longer or heavier than the others, declare it separately. A consignment described as “10 boxes, 100 kg total” is not enough to test individual piece limits or calculate occupied space accurately.
When boxes should move on a pallet
Palletising may be the better choice when there are many cartons, individual pieces are heavy, the load needs forklift handling or loose pieces would be unstable. Build a square, level stack with heavier cartons at the bottom. Keep every carton inside the pallet footprint, protect corners, wrap the load to contain it and use suitable strapping so the stack and pallet remain one unit.
A pallet changes the pickup requirements. Confirm forklift or loading-dock access at both sites. If ground-level collection or delivery is required, request a suitable tailgate service during quoting and confirm that the packed pallet is within the equipment’s safe capacity.
Pack cartons for normal freight handling
- Choose a new or genuinely sound corrugated carton rated for the contents.
- Wrap products individually where surfaces or components can strike each other.
- Use dense cushioning around vulnerable faces, corners and edges.
- Fill voids so the contents cannot shift, without overfilling until the walls bow.
- Keep heavy items centred and away from the carton walls.
- Seal the top and bottom seams with pressure-sensitive packing tape in an H pattern.
- Remove old routing labels and barcodes before applying the current label.
A “fragile” sticker is information, not a protective system. The carton still needs to tolerate normal sorting, stacking, vehicle vibration and transfers between handling points.
What to enter for a multi-box quote
Provide the pickup and delivery suburbs and postcodes, address type, number of cartons, and the final length, width, height and weight of every carton type. Add the declared contents, delivery deadline and any restricted-goods information. Tell us whether the cartons are loose or palletised and whether either site has limited vehicle access.
If the boxes contain liquids, batteries, aerosols, chemicals, food, glass or other sensitive goods, describe them specifically. Carrier acceptance and protection conditions differ. “Commercial goods” is not a sufficient contents declaration when the product affects safety or eligibility.
Business delivery details that prevent rework
Include the receiver’s business name, street address, contact person and usable phone number. For shopping centres, construction sites, hospitals and distribution centres, note booking references, receiving hours, dock requirements or site instructions before dispatch. A carrier quote normally covers transport, not unplanned waiting, unpacking or hand-carrying cartons through a building.
