Practical
freight guide
An Italian delivery is shaped by more than the country and city. The province, postcode, building access and whether the goods are going to the mainland, Sicily or Sardinia can change the domestic leg. Customs also needs an importer and a description detailed enough to distinguish machinery from fashion, food or cosmetics.
Clever Couriers helps Australian businesses compare eligible international courier and air-freight services for cartons, commercial samples, replacement parts and palletised goods. Quotes are based on actual packed freight and the receiver’s readiness to import it.
Prepare the Italian importer
Commercial goods entering Italy from Australia are imported into the EU. The Italian or EU business responsible for the declaration may require an EORI number and can appoint a customs representative. Confirm this role before dispatch.
A purchasing contact is not necessarily authorised to clear freight. Record the legal entity, tax and customs contacts, delivery warehouse and broker instructions. If the goods are sent to a trade show or hotel, establish a professional import arrangement rather than naming the venue by default.
Use the complete Italian address
Provide recipient or company, street type and name, civic number, five-digit CAP postcode, locality and two-letter province code where available. Add floor, unit, internal number or delivery gate. A correct province helps distinguish localities with similar names.
Historic centres can have restricted traffic zones and limited loading access. Confirm whether the receiver can accept a commercial vehicle and whether an appointment, porter or alternative collection point is needed.
Document the product, not the industry
“Automotive”, “fashion” or “food equipment” describes a sector, not an item. State the product, material, function, quantity, brand, model and origin. For apparel, include garment and fibre; for mechanical goods, explain what the component does.
Use realistic values for samples and no-charge replacements. The commercial invoice, packing list and booking should agree on piece counts and contents. Incorrect or vague descriptions can delay tariff classification and security review.
VAT, duty and IOSS
Italian imports can attract VAT, customs duty and excise depending on classification, value and origin. For qualifying low-value consumer sales into the EU, IOSS can allow the seller or marketplace to collect VAT at sale for non-excisable consignments not exceeding €150.
Do not treat €150 as a blanket tax-free allowance. Business-to-business freight, higher-value shipments, alcohol and other excise goods use different processes. Confirm who pays assessments and how the carrier will receive any IOSS data.
Food, wine and agricultural products
Italian demand for Australian food and wine does not remove EU sanitary, labelling and excise requirements. Meat, dairy, seafood, plant products, supplements and packaged food may need certificates, approved establishments or prior notification.
Alcohol can require excise arrangements as well as dangerous-goods review for air transport. The importer should check the exact product, alcohol percentage, quantity and intended sale before a booking is made.
Cosmetics, leather and branded goods
Cosmetics placed on the EU market may require a responsible person, safety documentation, notification and compliant labels. Leather, timber, wool or goods containing animal-derived material may face species or sanitary controls.
Branded fashion and accessories should have authentic commercial records. Counterfeit-goods enforcement is separate from the payment of duty and tax. Provide purchase and authorisation evidence if the importer anticipates a question.
Mainland, Sicily and Sardinia delivery
Milan and northern industrial regions can be served through major European air gateways and road networks; Rome and central or southern destinations involve their own domestic routing. Sicily and Sardinia add an island connection and can extend delivery or restrict heavy freight options.
Price the precise CAP. An arrival scan in Milan does not mean a Palermo, Cagliari or rural delivery is complete. Keep the receiver’s telephone available for local coordination.
Prepare cartons and pallets for handling
International cartons should resist compression and repeated transfers. Protect corners, immobilise contents and seal every seam. A pallet must remain one stable handling unit, with no loose cartons or overhang.
For machinery, marble samples, ceramics or fragile design products, consider whether a crate is appropriate. FreightSafe remains limited protection, so packaging and separate insurance decisions should match the consequence of loss or damage.
Italy quote checklist
- Australian pickup and Italian street, CAP, locality and province;
- mainland, Sicily or Sardinia destination;
- consignee, importer, EORI and appointed customs representative;
- each carton or pallet size, weight and stackability;
- exact goods, composition, use, quantity, brand and model;
- customs value, currency, origin, HS code and transaction reason;
- VAT, IOSS, duty and excise responsibility;
- food, cosmetic, animal-product or dangerous-goods approvals; and
- restricted-zone access, receiving hours and unloading needs.
Compare modes without borrowing unsupported promises
Clever Couriers can assess eligible courier and air-freight options from the data supplied, then support the booking and tracking. Italian Customs and relevant EU or national agencies decide release and product permission.
Quoted transit information is indicative and customs time is additional. FreightSafe is limited protection only and is not comprehensive transit insurance.
