Practical
freight guide

Ireland needs one question answered before anything else: is the delivery in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland? Dublin and Cork are EU destinations; Belfast is part of the United Kingdom. The systems, identifiers and tax treatment cannot be swapped because both places share the island.

Clever Couriers compares eligible international courier and air-freight options for Australian cartons, samples, parts and commercial goods. The complete address, importer and product determine which service can be used.

Confirm the customs jurisdiction

Goods for the Republic of Ireland enter the EU and are administered by Irish Revenue. Northern Ireland has a distinct UK and EU-related goods framework. Use the destination country and postcode correctly rather than selecting Ireland from habit.

If a business operates on both sides of the border, confirm which legal entity purchases and imports the goods. An invoice to a Dublin company with delivery to Belfast can require a different arrangement from an ordinary Republic delivery.

Prepare the Irish importer and electronic declaration

Commercial imports into the Republic generally require an EU importer with an EORI and an electronic customs declaration, often lodged through a customs representative. The importer should be established before the carrier submits pre-arrival data.

EU Import Control System 2 relies on accurate commodity and party information before arrival. Incomplete descriptions can cause requests, holds or rejection of data. Give the broker enough information to declare what is physically inside every package.

Use the county and Eircode

Provide recipient or company, building or unit, street or townland, locality, county and Eircode. Rural Irish addresses can rely heavily on the Eircode, so obtain it directly from the receiver. Include an active Irish telephone number.

Do not replace a townland with the nearest major city. Delivery planning needs the actual road and locality. For business parks, add unit, gate and receiving-hour details.

Dublin arrival is only the first Irish milestone

Many air shipments enter through Dublin before moving to Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford or rural counties. The domestic leg can add depot transfers and a local delivery schedule. An airport-arrival scan should not be interpreted as delivery.

Offshore islands and isolated addresses may have handovers, sailing dependencies or service exclusions. Quote the precise Eircode so eligibility is checked before collection in Australia.

VAT, duty and IOSS

Goods imported into the Republic from Australia can attract Irish import VAT and customs duty. IOSS may apply to qualifying EU consumer sales of non-excisable goods in consignments not exceeding €150 when VAT is collected at the point of sale.

The scheme does not apply to every shipment. Higher-value goods, commercial business imports and excise items follow other procedures. Agree whether the Irish importer, seller or marketplace handles tax and who pays carrier clearance fees.

Describe commercial goods in usable terms

Use product name, material, function, quantity, model, value, origin and reason for export. “Agricultural parts” should say which machine and what the part does; “nutrition products” should identify the actual supplement and ingredients.

Samples and repairs still need a defensible value. Ensure the invoice, packing list and booking agree. Customs may compare the description with the importer’s business and transaction records.

Controlled products and Irish market access

Food, supplements, animal products, plants, medicines, medical devices, alcohol and certain chemicals can require licences, sanitary documents or specific border entry points. The receiver should check Irish and EU requirements before dispatch.

Electrical, radio and other regulated products may need EU conformity arrangements. Carrier acceptance confirms transport only; it does not certify the product for sale in Ireland.

Pack for air and wet regional conditions

Use rigid outer packaging and moisture-resistant protection where cartons may encounter exposed loading areas or repeated transfers. Secure liquids in leakproof primary and secondary packaging when the product is otherwise accepted.

Pallets must be stable and forkliftable. Confirm unloading at rural or residential receivers, because a normal commercial air-freight delivery may not include tailgate equipment or movement across private land.

Ireland quote checklist

  • Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland confirmed;
  • full address, county, Eircode or correct UK postcode;
  • consignee, importer, EORI and customs representative;
  • piece count, packaging, dimensions and gross weights;
  • specific commodity, materials, function, quantity and model;
  • customs value, currency, origin, HS code and export reason;
  • VAT, IOSS, duty and clearance-payment arrangement;
  • permits, certificates and dangerous-goods details; and
  • regional access, island handover, unloading and required date.

Keep the receiver involved from dispatch

Clever Couriers can compare eligible options and assist with booking and tracking. Irish Revenue or UK authorities control customs treatment according to the destination. The receiver should monitor clearance contact and answer promptly.

FreightSafe is limited protection only, not comprehensive transit insurance, and its conditions and claim limits apply.
