Practical
freight guide
A Portugal quote should state whether the goods are going to the mainland, Madeira or the Azores. Each destination is Portuguese, but island transport and regional VAT treatment can differ. A Lisbon rate should not be reused for Funchal or Ponta Delgada.
Clever Couriers compares eligible international courier and air-freight options for Australian businesses sending cartons, commercial samples, replacement parts and palletised products. The final postcode, importer and commodity shape the result.
Identify the Portuguese destination territory
Mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores are within the EU customs framework, but the autonomous regions apply reduced VAT rates compared with the mainland. Island delivery can also add another air or sea movement.
Provide the island or mainland locality explicitly. Do not use Lisbon as a placeholder destination while waiting for the receiver’s full address, because the chosen service may not extend on identical terms.
Prepare the importer and EORI
Commercial goods need an EU importer ready to declare them, commonly using an EORI and a customs representative. Obtain the Portuguese legal entity, tax contact and broker details before the shipment departs Australia.
A holiday villa, hotel or event site may accept a personal parcel but decline importer responsibility for business stock. The delivery address and importer can be different parties only when the arrangement is valid and documented.
Complete the customs documents
The commercial invoice should show seller and buyer, specific goods, composition or material, use, quantity, unit and total value, currency, origin and reason for export. List the HS code where confirmed.
Use realistic values for samples, returns and warranty replacements. If goods are temporarily imported for an exhibition or repair, ask the broker about the proper procedure before export and keep serial-number records.
VAT, duty and IOSS
Import VAT generally applies to commercial goods entering Portugal from Australia. Mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores use different standard VAT rates, so the correct destination matters. Duty depends on tariff classification, value and origin.
IOSS can apply to qualifying consumer distance sales of non-excisable goods in consignments not exceeding €150. It is not a general duty-and-tax waiver and does not cover alcohol or ordinary B2B inventory.
Use the Portuguese postcode correctly
Provide recipient or company, street, building, floor or unit, seven-digit postcode in NNNN-NNN format and locality. Add a Portuguese telephone number and any parish, industrial-estate or access information the receiver uses.
Historic districts in Lisbon and Porto can have narrow streets and restricted loading. Rural properties may need clearer directions, while gated commercial sites can require an appointment or purchase-order reference.
Lisbon, Porto and island delivery
Lisbon is the main air and commercial centre, while Porto and northern Portugal have strong manufacturing and distribution activity. Inland and Algarve deliveries add domestic linehaul from the gateway.
Madeira and the Azores require island connections that can be sensitive to weather, capacity and commodity restrictions. Batteries, dangerous goods and heavy pallets may not follow the same final service as ordinary cartons.
Food, wine, cork and natural materials
Food, wine, supplements, plant products and animal-derived goods can require EU sanitary, labelling or excise procedures. The importer should verify the precise product and commercial quantity before uplift.
Cork, timber, wool and other natural materials should be described accurately and checked for species, treatment or product rules. Wooden pallets and crates used in international trade should meet applicable treatment and marking requirements.
Choose a service for the packed freight
International courier can suit compatible cartons and urgent samples. Commercial air freight may fit heavier multi-piece or palletised goods with broker support. Ask what is included beyond airport arrival and customs clearance.
Measure the completed package at its widest points. Stable pallets need restraint, no overhang and confirmed unloading. A residential island receiver may not be able to accept a commercial pallet vehicle.

Make the Portuguese postcode the basis of the quote
Clever Couriers can compare eligible options and support booking and tracking. Portuguese and EU authorities control entry, assessment and product requirements. Customs and island-connection time sit outside a simple international transit estimate.
FreightSafe is limited protection only and is not comprehensive transit insurance. Review its terms and consider separate cover for higher-value goods.
