Practical
freight guide

Türkiye sits across major European and Asian trade routes, but it is not an EU customs destination and it does not use the Gulf states’ import systems. A shipment from Australia needs a Turkish importer, a detailed tariff classification and a check for product-safety controls before the transport mode is chosen.

Clever Couriers helps Australian businesses compare eligible courier and air-freight options to Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and other Turkish destinations. The right setup depends on the goods, packed pieces, customs value, urgency and the receiver’s ability to clear them.

Confirm the importer and customs representative

For commercial goods, identify the Turkish legal entity that will act as importer and the customs broker or representative it plans to use. A customer’s employee, hotel, exhibition venue or third-party warehouse should not be named as importer without its agreement and authority.

The invoice name, tax or registration information and delivery party should be consistent with the importer’s instructions. Decide who will answer customs queries and pay duty, VAT, brokerage, inspections and storage before dispatch.

Classify to the Turkish GTIP

Türkiye uses a detailed tariff classification commonly expressed as a 12-digit GTIP. The importer or broker should confirm the code based on composition, function, production and intended use. Do not extend a six-digit code to twelve digits by guessing.

Use a product description that supports that classification. “Rechargeable handheld thermal-imaging camera with lithium-ion battery contained in equipment” is more useful than “electronic device”. Include model and technical literature where they assist customs or product-control review.

Check whether TAREKS applies

The Turkish Ministry of Trade operates TAREKS for risk-based control of specified import and export products. Official material lists categories including personal protective equipment, toys, batteries, construction products, radio and telecommunications terminal equipment, medical devices, machinery, pressure equipment and electrical or electronic equipment.

The exact requirement depends on the product and current legislation. The importer should determine whether registration, conformity documents, test records or an inspection is required before the goods leave Australia. Transport acceptance does not certify legal product compliance.

Treat express-shipment rules as limited procedures

Türkiye publishes specific rules for goods arriving through postal and express operators. Simplified or fixed-rate treatments apply only to defined categories, values and purposes and can change. They should not be treated as a universal shortcut for business stock.

Commercial samples, goods sent to legal entities and restricted products can require different declarations or supporting documents. Ask the importer and proposed carrier to confirm whether the shipment is eligible for express clearance before booking it as a parcel.

Prepare valuation and origin evidence

The commercial invoice should list seller, buyer, consignee and importer, detailed product lines, quantities, unit and total values, currency, origin and transaction purpose. Free samples, repairs and warranty replacements still need a defensible customs value.

Duty, import VAT and other measures depend on the classification, value, origin and applicable trade policy. The importer should confirm current rates. Goods dispatched from Australia are not automatically Australian origin, and Türkiye’s customs arrangements with other markets do not make an Australian shipment an EU movement.

Plan delivery beyond Istanbul

Istanbul is the largest logistics gateway, but many receivers are in Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Antalya, Gaziantep and industrial centres across the country. Confirm whether the quote is airport-to-airport, to a broker’s terminal or door-to-door to the final province and district.

Türkiye’s geography, urban traffic, mountain routes and regional distances can affect the last mile. Islands, historic centres, secure factories and construction sites may need special access or appointments.

Use a complete Turkish address

Provide the recipient and company, neighbourhood, street or avenue, building number, floor, unit, district, province, postcode and local telephone number. Turkish characters should be entered correctly where the booking system accepts them; retain a clear Latin-script version if requested by the carrier.

For pallets, add the receiving department, gate, appointment and forklift or dock availability. A heavy commercial consignment should not be booked on the assumption that manual unloading is included.

Türkiye quote checklist

  • Australian pickup and full Turkish destination address;
  • province, district, neighbourhood, street and postcode;
  • legal importer and appointed customs representative;
  • piece count, packaging, final dimensions and weights;
  • detailed goods, technical use and confirmed GTIP;
  • value, currency, origin and transaction purpose;
  • TAREKS or other conformity requirements;
  • battery, dangerous-goods and temperature information; and
  • tax payer, receiving hours, site access and unloading.

Choose the service after the compliance check

Clever Couriers can compare currently eligible international courier and air-freight options and support the booking and tracking. Türkiye’s Ministry of Trade, customs authorities and product regulators determine entry and release. The importer must confirm current requirements for the actual consignment.

Transit estimates exclude customs examinations and importer delays. FreightSafe provides limited protection only and is not comprehensive transit insurance.
