Practical
freight guide
Thailand-bound freight can move quickly by air, but food, supplements, cosmetics, medicines, plants, communications equipment and other products may require approval from a Thai authority. A low-value parcel should not be assumed duty-free under current rules. The product and importer need to be checked before pickup.
Clever Couriers compares eligible courier and air-freight services for Australian businesses shipping cartons, ecommerce orders, samples and palletised goods to Thailand. Current options depend on the destination, commodity, value, package details and receiver’s clearance readiness.
Confirm the receiver and importer
Record the consignee’s legal name, Thai address, phone and email. Commercial cargo should have a Thai importer that can lodge the entry and obtain permits. Personal courier shipments may also require identification and authority for the courier to clear on the receiver’s behalf.
Ask who will answer customs questions and pay duty, VAT and any brokerage. Do not ship regulated goods to a private address on the assumption that the courier will obtain a commercial licence after arrival.
Thailand’s low-value treatment has changed
Thailand began applying customs duty to low-cost imports from January 2026 in addition to the existing tax framework. Senders should therefore avoid relying on older articles describing a broad duty-free threshold.
The actual assessment depends on classification, value and current law. Confirm the landed-charge arrangement with the importer or broker and never advertise tax-free delivery without written service confirmation.
Thai FDA and other controlled goods
Processed and unprocessed food, medicines, medical devices, vitamins, supplements and cosmetics can require Thai Food and Drug Administration licensing. Plants and planting material, live animals and animal products, radio equipment, antiques and other categories can require permits from different agencies.
Provide ingredients, formulation, brand, model, quantity and intended use before dispatch. A few personal-use units and commercial stock can be treated differently. Carrier acceptance does not replace the government permit.
Prepare the commercial invoice
List every product with a clear material and function, quantity, unit and total value, currency, origin and HS code where confirmed. State whether the goods are sold, sampled, repaired, returned or gifted. Add a packing list for multi-piece or mixed-product shipments.
Thailand import clearance commonly relies on the invoice, packing list and airway bill, with licences added where applicable. Inconsistency between these documents can delay assessment.
Use a complete Thai destination
Provide house or building, moo or village information where used, soi, road, subdistrict, district, province and five-digit postcode. Include a Thai-script address supplied by the receiver where possible and a reachable local mobile number.
Bangkok condominiums, malls and offices may require unit, floor, security or loading-dock instructions. Resort islands, remote provinces and rural premises can involve a domestic handover or extended-area delivery.
Courier and air-freight selection
Express courier can suit compliant cartons with a prepared recipient. Air freight may be considered for heavier cartons, pallets and formal commercial cargo. Compare chargeable weight, customs entry, permit process and final transport, not merely a headline transit estimate.
Pallet delivery requires a stable base and destination unloading. Confirm whether transport is door-to-door, airport-to-airport or terminal-to-door. Standard delivery does not include unpacking or inside placement.
Packaging and climate
Use rigid cartons, internal restraint and moisture-resistant outer protection suitable for several handling stages. Keep food or cosmetics within any temperature and shelf-life limits set by the maker and importer; normal air freight is not automatically temperature-controlled.
Declare batteries, aerosols, perfumes, chemicals and other dangerous goods. Provide a safety data sheet or specifications so air eligibility can be assessed.
Thailand quote checklist
- Australian origin and full Thai delivery address;
- province, district, subdistrict, postcode and local mobile;
- Thai-script address where available;
- consignee, importer and broker or permit arrangements;
- finished piece count, dimensions and gross weights;
- product, material, brand, model, quantity and intended use;
- value, currency, origin, HS code and reason for export;
- FDA or other regulator approval and dangerous-goods data; and
- destination-charge responsibility, access and deadline.
Build customs time into the promise
Estimated transport time does not include an indefinite permit application or receiver delay. Obtain approvals before pickup and keep the consignee ready to answer the courier or broker. Remote and island delivery can add another operating schedule.
Plan around Thai names and communication
Use the receiver’s legal or identification name for customs and the trading name for delivery where they differ. Keep a Thai-script version of the recipient and address available, particularly outside central business districts. A local telephone contact is essential when the courier must clarify a soi, building entrance or rural landmark.
Clever Couriers can compare eligible services and coordinate booking and tracking. Thai Customs and the relevant agencies decide entry. FreightSafe is limited protection only and is not comprehensive transit insurance.
