“Door to door” sounds like one uninterrupted service, but an international shipment can pass through an origin driver, export facility, airline, import terminal, customs process and destination delivery partner. A useful quote defines which stages are included, who must provide documents and what happens when the receiver needs special access or customs support.

What door-to-door freight usually covers
The transport plan can include collection from the nominated origin, export handling, international carriage, destination handling and delivery to an accessible address. The exact service varies by carrier and lane. Some express courier products integrate these stages; larger freight may use separate local and international providers.
Door delivery normally means delivery to the carrier-accessible point at the address. It does not automatically include stairs, unpacking, room placement, installation, crane work, removal of packaging or prolonged waiting. Tell us about those requirements during quoting so they can be assessed or arranged separately.
Customs clearance is a separate responsibility to define
Carrier transport may include standard clearance processing, but duties, taxes, government fees, permits, inspections, brokerage outside the normal scope and storage can still be additional. For formal or complex entries, a licensed customs broker may be required. The quote should identify the intended clearance arrangement rather than leaving it until arrival.
The exporter must provide accurate commercial information. The importer must be legally able and ready to clear the goods, answer questions and pay charges according to the agreed trade terms. Clever Couriers cannot override customs or biosecurity decisions and does not provide legal or tax advice.
Origin collection needs more than an address
Confirm the ready date, collection hours, site contact and vehicle access. State whether freight is loose cartons, a crate or pallet, and whether a forklift or dock is available. For overseas supplier collections, confirm that the supplier will release the goods, print or attach labels and provide export paperwork when requested.
A collection booking is not a packing service unless expressly quoted. Freight should be sealed, labelled and accessible before the driver arrives. Failed collections can cause new fees and lost export connections.
Destination delivery must match the receiver
Provide a complete street address, local phone number, email and receiving hours. Distribution centres, trade sites, hospitals, campuses and shopping centres may require bookings, references or security procedures. Residential or limited-access destinations may need a different vehicle or service.
The receiver should expect customs and delivery contact. If they ignore a duty request or cannot accept the freight, storage, redelivery, return or abandonment charges can arise. Agree responsibilities before booking, particularly when selling to a new overseas customer.
Door-to-door options for cartons and pallets
Suitable cartons may move through an integrated international courier network with pickup and final delivery. Heavier multi-piece loads, pallets and crates may need a freight-forwarding solution with local cartage at one or both ends. The right choice depends on total handling units, dimensional weight, stackability, aircraft compatibility and address access.
Measure each completed carton or pallet. For a pallet, include the base and all wrapping; declare whether it is stackable and whether mechanical unloading is available. For unusually long or fragile cargo, explain orientation and protection requirements.
Documents that connect the handovers
A commercial invoice generally provides the product description, quantities, values, currency, origin, seller, buyer and trade terms. A packing list can show how goods are distributed across cartons or pallets. Other documents may include permits, licences, certificates, safety data, statements of origin or broker authorities.
Names, addresses, values and piece counts should be consistent across the booking and documents. Vague descriptions or mismatched totals create avoidable questions at the border.

- Are pickup and final delivery included at the stated addresses?
- Is the service courier express or separately handled air freight?
- What package measurements and weights were priced?
- Who arranges export and import clearance?
- Who pays duties, taxes and destination charges?
- Are remote area, tailgate or appointment conditions included?
- What is the estimated transit basis and what can affect it?
- What actions are required from the supplier and receiver?
Tracking across an international chain
Tracking reflects scans at operational milestones, not continuous location data. The reference may show collection, export processing, departure, import clearance and delivery stages.
