DHL Express is widely associated with international delivery, but a carrier name is not a complete shipping plan. The origin postcode, destination, contents, packed size, value and deadline still determine whether a DHL option is available and appropriate through Clever Couriers.
We can assess eligible DHL international services alongside other carrier choices within a managed freight account. The quote confirms the specific option offered; it does not grant access to every DHL product, website feature, retail location, discount or direct-account benefit.
Shipments that may suit an express network
Suitable business uses can include documents, product samples, replacement parts, retail orders and manageable commercial cartons that need door-to-door international movement. Pallets, crates, unusually heavy pieces, dangerous goods and specialised commodities require separate review and may use a different freight solution.
Express does not mean customs-free. The shipment still requires accurate declarations and can be affected by government assessment, destination restrictions, weather, public holidays and receiver response.
Build the quote from complete shipment data
Provide the exact collection and delivery postcodes, full address types and local contacts. Measure the sealed carton at its widest points and weigh it after all packaging has been added. State each piece separately when a consignment contains several cartons.
International pricing may use dimensional weight where the carton occupies more network space than the physical weight reflects. A compact package can open more options than an unnecessarily large carton, provided the goods remain adequately protected.
Prepare a clear contents description
Explain what the products are, their materials or use where relevant, the quantity, value, currency and country of origin. “Sample”, “gift”, “spare parts” or “commercial goods” should not stand alone. The declaration must reflect the real transaction and reason for movement.
Tell us about lithium batteries, aerosols, perfume, alcohol, chemicals, liquids, food, medicines or temperature requirements before quoting. These products may be restricted, need documentation or be unavailable on the proposed service.
Pack the parcel for a cross-border handling chain
Use a sound rigid outer carton, protect individual items and fill voids so the contents cannot move. Seal every top and bottom seam with packing tape. Remove old labels and place the current routing label on a flat surface without folding the barcode around an edge.
Original manufacturer packaging can be useful when it is engineered and intact, but retail packaging often needs an additional transport carton. Fragile, valuable or sensitive items may need double boxing, a fitted case or a crate. Packaging remains the sender’s responsibility.
Waybills, invoices and customs information
The carrier label or waybill identifies the shipment, while the commercial invoice explains the goods and transaction for border processing. Multi-piece consignments may benefit from a packing list. Additional permits, licences, certificates or safety information depend on the commodity and countries.
Make sure party names, addresses, product descriptions, values and piece counts agree across documents. The shipper and importer remain responsible for truthful declarations, classification and permissions. Clever Couriers does not guarantee customs release.
Who pays duties and taxes?
Transport charges and import charges are not the same. Duties, taxes, government fees and certain clearance costs can be assessed at destination. Agree the trade terms, importer and payer before dispatch, and make sure the receiver expects contact.
If the receiver refuses charges or fails to provide information, storage, return or disposal consequences can follow. The shipment should not leave merely because the transport price has been paid.
What to include in your request
- Australian origin or destination, including postcode;
- overseas origin or destination, including postcode;
- collection-ready date and business deadline;
- carton count, packed measurements and weights;
- specific contents, quantity, value, currency and origin;
- reason for export or import;
- batteries, dangerous goods or permit needs;
- importer and duty/tax payment arrangement; and
- collection or delivery restrictions.
Tracking an eligible DHL movement
Tracking can show scans for collection, export, transit, import clearance and delivery. A pause does not always mean the parcel is stationary; it may be between scan events or awaiting a scheduled movement. An exception status should be read for the required action.
