The fastest flight does not help if the supplier has not released the goods, the invoice is incomplete or no Australian party is ready to answer customs and biosecurity questions. Import air freight should be planned backwards from Australian clearance and delivery, not treated as a collection that can be fixed after arrival.

Identify the Australian importer
Before requesting collection, confirm which Australian entity will import the goods and whether it has the information and authority needed for clearance. The importer may need an ABN, broker authority, product permits, supplier documents or evidence supporting value and origin, depending on the shipment.
The delivery receiver and legal importer are not always the same party. State the arrangement accurately. Clever Couriers can help identify transport and commonly requested document details, but the importer remains responsible for compliance and should obtain customs, biosecurity, legal or tax advice where needed.
Give the overseas supplier precise instructions
Confirm the pickup address, contact, ready date, operating hours and loading access. The supplier should pack for international handling, provide final dimensions and weights and make the freight available to the nominated driver. If labels or documents must be printed, agree who will attach them before collection.
Supplier invoices should use specific product descriptions, correct quantities, transaction values, currency, country of origin and agreed trade terms. “Parts” or “sample” is not enough. For multi-carton or pallet shipments, request a packing list that reconciles piece counts and gross weight.
Check Australian import and biosecurity requirements
Some goods need permits, treatment, declarations or inspection before they can be released. Food, plant and animal products, used machinery, timber packaging, soil-contaminated equipment, chemicals, medicines, vehicles and other controlled goods can attract additional requirements. Confirm them before the freight departs.
Carrier acceptance is a separate issue. Batteries, dangerous goods, liquids, aerosols and temperature-sensitive products require service review even if they are legally importable. Never present regulated cargo under a generic description.
Courier import or air-freight import?
Integrated courier services can suit documents and manageable cartons, with collection, air movement, clearance processing and final delivery under one network. Air-freight forwarding can suit pallets, crates, heavier consignments and cargo needing separate origin or destination arrangements. The comparison depends on the actual freight profile and lane.
Airport-to-airport pricing is not equivalent to delivery to your premises. Confirm origin collection, terminal handling, customs brokerage, duty and tax disbursement, storage and Australian cartage in the quote.
Information needed for an import quote
- overseas supplier address, postcode, country and contact details;
- Australian delivery address, postcode and site type;
- collection-ready date and preferred delivery timeframe;
- carton, crate or pallet count with final dimensions and weights;
- specific product descriptions, quantities, values and origins;
- Australian importer details and proposed customs broker;
- trade terms and intended payer of destination charges;
- forklift, dock, tailgate or appointment requirements; and
- batteries, dangerous goods, permits or biosecurity concerns.
Understand the landed-cost components
The international transport quote is only one part of landed cost. Depending on the goods and arrangement, the import can also involve duties, GST, customs or broker fees, government charges, inspections, airline or terminal handling, storage and local delivery. Rates and rules can change, so obtain advice using the current classification and shipment value.
Agree with the supplier which trade terms apply and which charges are included in their sale. An unexpectedly prepaid freight component can still leave the Australian buyer responsible for customs and destination costs.
Avoid arrival storage and clearance delay
Documents should be reviewed while the goods are being prepared, not after they land. Give the broker or clearance party advance notice and ensure the importer can respond during transit. Keep permits, product literature and proof of payment available in case authorities request them.
Customs and biosecurity authorities may inspect or hold freight and set release conditions. Those decisions and timeframes are outside Clever Couriers’ control. Incomplete data and slow importer responses can add storage or redelivery costs.
Prepare the Australian delivery
Confirm whether the delivery site can receive the packed size and weight. Pallets may require a forklift, loading dock or pre-arranged tailgate. Large vehicles may not suit all residential streets or worksites. Standard delivery does not include unpacking, internal placement or installation unless expressly arranged.
