A delivery to a trade counter is not the same as a delivery to a live construction site. The site may have a gate booking, incomplete access road, crane exclusion zone, no forklift and a crew waiting for one missing component. Construction freight needs the material profile and unloading plan resolved before the truck is dispatched.

Map the construction freight flow
Supplier-to-branch freight usually has regular docks and repeated handling units. Branch-to-customer freight may involve homes, workshops or small sites. Project freight requires dates, stage sequencing and named site contacts. Urgent trade parts need a genuine required time and confirmation that the freight is ready now.
Match packaging to the material
Cartons of fittings need dense products immobilised so they do not burst the base. Bags and pails may need leak or puncture containment. Tiles and brittle finishes need rigid support. Timber, pipe, conduit and profiles need full-length restraint. Sheet and panel products need supported faces and protected edges.
Fully enclose sharp items and cap projecting ends. Keep pallet loads inside the footprint and restrain them structurally. Stretch wrap is useful for containment but does not secure steel, timber packs or machinery.
Know when standard freight stops
A pallet network may suit packaged trade supplies delivered to an accessible point with suitable unloading equipment. Long structural loads, loose steel, trusses, crane placement, Moffett unloading, tilt-tray work or permit movements require a service specifically equipped for that job.

Check the site before booking
Confirm the street and gate address, site contact, receiving hours, induction or booking process, surface condition and available turning space. State whether the site has a forklift and its safe capacity. If a tailgate is requested, the delivery point needs a suitable firm and level surface for the equipment.
Record overhead restrictions, narrow access, weight limits and exclusion zones. The site supervisor—not an unattended sign at the gate—should know the freight is arriving.
Sequence freight to the build
Delivering too early can create storage, weather exposure and double handling; delivering too late can stop a crew. Tie consignments to the project, stage, purchase order and required date. Separate materials needed in different phases rather than building one mixed load that must be broken down on site.
For a booked delivery window, allow loading and linehaul time plus contingency. A standard transit estimate is not a guaranteed appointment.

Regional jobs add distance, fewer delivery windows and more importance to accurate site details. Consolidate planned materials where it reduces handling without creating an unstable mixed load. For emergency components, compare the operational cost of delay with the available express options.

Keep delivery documentation site-ready
Place purchase-order, project and delivery references on the booking and outer handling unit where required. Provide the driver with the approved gate or loading location—not a general office address that cannot receive trucks. The site contact should be reachable during the delivery window and authorised to direct unloading.
Photograph prepared loads, restraint and labels before collection. At the site, inspect the freight before it is moved into the work area. If packaging is damaged, record the condition promptly and retain it for the support or claim process.
