Long and oversized freight cannot be assessed from weight alone. A lightweight six-metre profile may be harder to route than a dense pallet, while a tall machine can use protected space above the load even when its footprint is ordinary. The carrier needs to know the full packed shape before choosing equipment.

Long freight
Common long items include pipes, poles, timber, aluminium profiles, conduits, rolls, fishing rods, sheet products and machinery components. Length can place freight outside automated parcel equipment or standard depot bays and may trigger manual-handling conditions.
Protect both ends, cover sharp edges and prevent rolling. Light tubes still need a rigid outer package and a flat label surface.
Bulky freight
Bulky freight may fit within normal legal road dimensions but occupy substantial cubic space. Furniture, gym equipment, large cartons and assembled commercial products can be expensive relative to their scale weight because vehicle capacity is limited by volume.
Reduce unnecessary empty space while retaining adequate protection. Quote the outer package, not the unassembled product dimensions.
Over-dimensional and over-mass loads
True oversize or over-mass transport may require specialist vehicles, permits, escorts, route planning or engineered loading. Examples can include large plant, agricultural equipment, industrial machinery and structures outside ordinary freight-network limits.
These loads cannot be booked safely as a generic pallet. Provide equipment specifications, centre of gravity, lifting points, overall dimensions and verified weight for specialist review.
Use a full-length handling base where needed
Heavy long items often need a skid or crate that supports the full length and allows safe forklift access. A short pallet under the centre can leave ends cantilevered, expose the product to impact and make the load unstable.
Block, brace and strap the product so it cannot slide or roll. The base must be rated for the weight and compatible with the lifting method.
Pack exposed and irregular surfaces
Cover protrusions, protect sharp corners and enclose vulnerable controls, paintwork or finished faces. Bare metal edges can injure handlers and damage neighbouring freight. A “fragile” label does not stop contact.
Machinery should be prepared according to manufacturer and carrier rules, including fluid drainage or dangerous-goods assessment where relevant.
Measure the bounding dimensions
Record the smallest rectangular space that fully contains the transport-ready package: maximum length, width and height. Include skids, end caps, wrapping, frames and protrusions. Provide gross weight and note whether the freight can be stacked.
Irregular shapes can be priced on occupied space rather than the material volume. Do not deduct hollow areas or tapering from the declared outside dimensions unless the quoting process specifically requests additional detail.
Loading and unloading
Confirm how the freight will be lifted at both sites. A forklift needs suitable tine access and capacity. Long or heavy loads may need two forklifts, a crane or a vehicle-mounted crane operated under a defined lift plan.
Tailgates suit only compatible freight within platform and handling limits. They are not a universal solution for long or unstable loads. Ground conditions, overhead clearance and truck access must be safe.
Site and route access
Provide road width, gate dimensions, turning space, overhead restrictions, site hours and any induction or appointment. Construction, mine and industrial sites may have vehicle and safety requirements beyond ordinary delivery.
For true oversize transport, route restrictions, bridge clearances, curfews and permits can shape the plan. These are specialist matters rather than standard online quote fields.

Why manual review matters
